Using Your Phone

The instructions below are the main functions on your analogue, digital or Cisco phone.

Cisco Jabber Softphone

The Cisco Jabber softphone platform streamlines communications and enhances productivity on many devices.  It unifies online presence, instant messaging, video, voice, voice messaging, and conferencing capabilities securely into one client on your desktop, laptop or mobile device.

Digital Telephone

The below info is for a digital phone, also called Meridian or System telephone (one with lots of buttons and an LCD display).

MAKE EXTERNAL CALL
  • Lift Handset or press [Hands-free]
  • Dial 1
  • Dial the number required (or press auto dial button)
There is no dial tone after dialling 1
MAKE INTERNAL CALL
  • Lift Handset
  • Dial the number required
 
TRANSFER While on a call:
  • Press [Transfer]
  • Dial the extension number
  • Announce the call
  • Press [Transfer]

If engaged or no answer press [Rls] then the line button.

CONFERENCE CALL While on a call:
  • Press [Conference]
  • Dial the extension number
  • Press [Conference] when they answer
You can add up to 6 people on one call.
RING AGAIN After calling an extension and getting busy tone:
  • Press [Ring Again]
  • Hang up
When the extension becomes available your extension will ring. Lift your handset and press [Ring Again] to make the call.
This feature does not work for numbers outside the University.

In the intervening time you can still make and receive calls.

To cancel
  • Press [Ring Again]
 
CALL PICK UP When a telephone near you in the same pickup group is ringing:
  • Lift handset
  • Press [Call Pickup]
To change Call Pickup Groups, contact the ITS Service Desk.
LAST NUMBER REDIAL
  • Lift handset
  • Press your own line key twice
 
CALL FORWARD
  • Press [Call Forward or Fwd All]
  • Dial the extension all calls are to be forwarded to.
  • Press [Fwd Off]
You can still make calls on your telephone, but only the extension to which you have forwarded the phone can call you.

While call forward is active you will get an interrupted dial tone.

To Cancel
  • Press [Call Forward or Fwd All] again
 
SYSTEM SPEED CALL
  • Lift handset
  • Press [Speed Call]
  • Dial 2 digit code required.
You have to be included in a Speed Call Group to use this feature.
To program
  • Press [Speed Call]
  • Dial 2 digit code
  • Dial Telephone Number
  • Press [Speed Call] again
Only the controller of the list can enter the program numbers.
AUTOMATED ATTENDANT From a telephone outside the University:
  • Dial 838-4466
  • Dial 1
  • Dial the extension required.
Direct Dial-In numbers can be reached directly without using the Automated Attendant. For extensions beginning with 4 precede the number with 838, for those beginning with 5 precede the number with 858.

Analog Telephone

In the instructions below Hook-flash refers to briefly pressing and releasing the switch-hook i.e. this is the switch that is activated by hanging up the telephone. Some telephones have a [Recall] button which achieves the same result.

You can add up to 3 people on one call.
RING AGAIN After calling an extension and getting busy tone:
  • Press [Recall] or Hook-flash
  • Dial 91
  • Hang up
When the extension becomes available your extension will ring. When you lift your handset the other extension will automatically be called again.
This feature does not work for numbers outside the University.

In the intervening time you can still make and receive calls.

To cancel
  • Lift Handset
  • Dial 92
  • Hang up.
 
CALL PICK UP When a telephone near you in the same pickup group is ringing:
  • Lift handset
  • Dial *41
To change Call Pickup Groups, contact the ITS Service Desk.
LAST NUMBER REDIAL

  • Press [Redial] or Dial 989
 
CALL FORWARD
  • Lift handset
  • Dial #1
  • Dial the extension all calls are to be forwarded to.

You can also view the status of your current requests and see the estimated delivery time for them, provide further information by adding notes or attaching files, and view a full history of all previous requests.
