Remote Desktop Connection

Staff and some PhD/Masters Students can be provided access to remotely access a computer on campus either from another location on campus, or from home. To be provided access for a Remote Desktop connection, you will need to contact the ITS Service Desk on ext 4008 (07 838 4008) to request the access. For master/PhD students, you will need authorization from a Faculty Dean or Head of Department for access before contacting the Service Desk.

To Remotely Connect to a computer on Campus

When connecting to a University computer from home, you will need access to the VPN Service and be connected via the VPN or the connection to the computer will fail. For non university computers, the VPN should not be required.

To Setup a remote desktop connection

For Windows 7 & 10, navigate to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Remote Desktop Connection
For Windows 8 users swipe the right side of the screen towards the left, or move the mouse to the top right corner to bring up the menu. Click the Search icon (the magnifying glass) and search for “Remote Desktop Connection”.

  1. Click Remote Desktop Connection to start the application.

  2. Enter your Computer Name or IP Address (if known) into the computer box.
  3. To save the connection so we do not have to enter the details every time, click Show Options

  4. Enter your Computer name or IP Address in the Computer field and enter your username into the Username field (For University computers this will be waikato\<username>). Tick Allow me to save Credentials
  5. Click Save As…

Save this to your desktop with a name of your choice. It is easier to remember if you save it as your Computer name. This will save as an .rdp file which will connect to your computer right away rather than going through this process every time.

Click Connect once saved. You will now be connected remotely to your computer

LD Self Service Log Your Own Ticket

The University has provided a Self Service tool through which you can log your own support tickets (jobs). You can also search for a previously logged ticket to check its status. For urgent jobs you can phone the ITS Service Desk: ext 4008 (838 4008) for support.
