Read and Publish Agreements
The Library has a number of “Read and Publish” deals that allow University of Waikato corresponding authors to publish open access in selected journals without payment of an Article Processing Charge (APC). The agreements we have entered into have been negotiated by CAUL (Council of Australian University Librarians) which we are a member of.
See the 2024 Read and Publish Agreements Journal Title List for titles that are included in these Read and Publish Agreements. (2024 list confirmed for most publishers; see spreadsheet for details).

What are read and publish agreements?
"A Read-and-Publish agreement is an agreement in which the publisher receives payment for reading and payment for publishing bundled into a single contract. The ‘read’ part of the agreement covers the subscriptions libraries pay so they can access closed material, and the ‘publish’ part covers APCs that authors would have paid to publish their papers as open access. This bundling together brings payment for publishing into a contractual arrangement handled by the library rather than being addressed ad hoc by individual authors who are choosing open access publishing. "
How do they work?
If you are the corresponding author in a journal that is part of the agreement, you will receive an email alerting you to the agreement and asking you to confirm eligibility after acceptance of your manuscript. Please note that in order for the notification to be triggered, your affiliation needs to be confirmed during the submission process by using your University of Waikato email address and entering the University of Waikato in any affiliation/institution fields.
- Author’s role: The corresponding author must be from the University of Waikato.
- Affiliation and email address: To be recognised as eligible University of Waikato authors when submitting to these publishers, you must use your University of Waikato email address and The University of Waikato for your affiliation and the name of the institution.
- Licences: Your Open Access articles will be published under Creative Commons (CC) licences.
- Article allowances: The article allowance provided by Oxford, Springer Nature and Wiley is an allocation shared by all libraries in the Council of Australasian University Librarians consortia and will be allocated on a first come-first served basis. Once the allowance is allocated, authors of additional articles may choose to publish as closed access, make their article open by submitting the author accepted manuscript to Research Commons or pay an Article Processing Charge for the article to be published open access. Publishing levels are monitored on the CAUL website.
- Publication types: Not all types of Open Access publications are eligible under this Read-and-Publish agreement. For example, Oxford, Springer Nature, Sage, Wiley and Taylor and Francis agreements offer publishing entitlements in "hybrid" journals only. Hybrid journals publish both open and closed articles within the same journal. Further information can be found in the description of an agreement.
- Article types: Not all article types are eligible. This information can be found in the description of an agreement.
- Page types: Some agreements allow for charges for colour pages or reprints
- Green Open Access: Some agreements allow authors to also publish green Open Access (ie in Research Commons). Further information can be found in the description of an agreement.
