How to Find Citations

This guide describes the best ways to find citations to articles and book chapters in databases held by the Library.

Hint: For extra citations, go to the website of the publishers of the journal in which the article appears. Search for the article. Publishers may list citations from within their own journals to articles they have published.

Articles

Business Source Complete
  • Select Cited References from the More menu on the top blue toolbar
  • Enter the author's last name and initial of the first name in the Cited Author box e.g., reid, d*
  • Click on Search. If there are numerous results, include the article title in the Cited Title box, the journal title in the Cited Source box, or the publication year in the Cited Year box
  • For each result, a check box appears where there is a citation available. Times Cited in this Database will indicate the number of times the item has been cited by other publications in this database
  • To see these, click on the check box to the left of the citation, and then on Find Citing Articles in the upper left of the results display
CiteSeerX
  • Register
  • Log In
  • Click on the Authors tab on the top toolbar
  • Enter author's name or name variations separated by "or"
  • Tick the Include Citations box
  • Click the Search button
  • Click on the Cited by link to see citations
Education Research Complete

Times cited in this database appears under article title.

MathSciNet

Note: Includes cited references from 2000 forward

  • Select the Citations tab
  • Search by Author, Journal, Subject or Year by selecting the appropriate tab e.g. Burke, M*
  • Click Search
  • Select the matching author from the drop-down menu (in this case Burke, Maxim R.) and click List Results for this author
  • Summary results display number of citations to a specific publication
  • Select an article (first link item in 'citation' that would look something like MR1086455 (92f:03053) )
  • Select From References or From Reviews from the citation box to the right
Proquest Central

Cited by [number] appears on the search results screen under the article details. You can also click on the title of an article to see a Cited by note and links to the citing documents at the top right hand corner of the page.

PsycINFO

  • Find the article you want and choose Cited by from the results screen
  • If you do a subject search, Cited by [number] will appear below the relevant article in the right-hand column. Click on the link to go to the citing article, or click on the title of the article, and follow the link to Cited by in the right-hand-navigation bar.
  • Following the Full-text from publisher link will also give you links to citing articles.
PubMed Central
  • Enter the author's name and other search options if desired (e.g., title of article, date, etc.)
  • Click on Search
  • Select an article from the results list by clicking on the title
  • If the article has been cited a box called Cited by [number] PubMed Central articles appears on the right hand side of the screen
  • Click on Advanced Search from the grey bar near the top right hand side of the screen
  • Enter the author's last name and initial(s) (e.g., saleh t m) in the Search box
  • Change All Fields in the drop-down box to Specific Author
  • Click on Search
  • Select an article from the results list by clicking on the title
  • If applicable, a Citing Articles box appears on the right hand side of the screen
SciFinder Scholar
  • Select Explore References
  • Select Author Name or Journal. If searching by Author Name, select all possible variations of the author's name
  • Select Citing from the results list
Scopus
  • From the Authors page, search on the author’s name
  • From the Author search results page, Click the number in front of the All box and see Show documents
  • Click on View citation overview
  • Author h-index is at the top right of the page
Social Services Abstracts

The Cited by number is under the article title.

Sociological Abstracts

The Cited by [number] appears on the search results screen under the article details. You can also click on the title of an article to see a Cited by note and links to the citing documents at the top right hand corner of the page.

Wiley Online Library
  • Find article. Open Article or Enhanced Article views.
  • Cited by [number] is under the DOI.

Book Chapters

Google Scholar
Search by the title of the chapter and check for Cited by link
Google Books
Search for citations of your chapter by its title but be careful to check on the validity of the citations
PsycINFO
Search by the title of the chapter and check for Cited by link
Scopus
Search by the title of the chapter and check for Cited by link AND/OR Look for citations of the chapter within reference lists
