This page will help you to find theses completed at the University of Waikato and other Universities, both New Zealand and worldwide.

University of Waikato theses

  • Digital copies of all theses deposited since January 2006 are only available through Research Commons. Theses are also fully indexed in Library Search.
  • For theses deposited before 2006, check Library Search for authors, titles, subjects and locations. Include 'thesis' and 'Waikato' as search keywords and add the subject and degree,
    e. g. thesis waikato chemistry Ph.D. (use other appropriate abbreviations such as M.A., M.Ed. or M.Sc. according to the subject you want to find).
  • Older theses which are held in storage can be requested through Library Search using the request button.

New Zealand theses

Theses held at other New Zealand Universities may be obtained via our Interlibrary loan and document delivery service.

Use to search for New Zealand theses. You can use Advanced Search and limit to Thesis.
Note that these are online theses only.

For theses completed at other New Zealand Universities, search with the keyword 'thesis' in the National Bibliographic Database or search for a known author or title. Some earlier theses may not be included, in which case either check in individual University Library Catalogues or the Union list (see below).

This publication contains a comprehensive list of theses completed at New Zealand Universities and New Zealand holdings of higher degree theses relating to New Zealand and the Pacific presented to overseas universities.

International theses

Theses to be purchased with University funds can be ordered through your Academic Liaison Librarian.


Theses held in digital repositories worldwide are usually available to read online. Find them through a search engine such as Google using 'thesis' and your subject as your keywords.

WorldCat provides access to records for over 1.2 billion items, including theses, books and articles from all parts of the world. There are links to full-text where this is available. Use Advanced Search and change the Content dropdown box to "Thesis/dissertations".

OAIster searches WorldCat for theses from open archive collections.

EBSCO Open Dissertations is a new, free electronic theses and dissertations database offering access to more than 800,000 ETDs.


Australian digital theses may be accessed via Trove, the National Library of Australia’s discovery service.

Theses Canada contains Canadian theses written after 1965, with full text for Canadian theses submitted after August 1998.
