Library Workshops and Tutorials

The Library runs tutorials for students throughout the year. These tutorials focus on study and research methods and how to best utilise the resources available through the Library.

We offer a great range of scheduled tutorials in the Library, plus an online tutorial on how to research and find information, which you can do at any time.

Library 101

Available during 'O' Week and week one in A and B Semester.

Microsoft Word

  • Get familiar with Microsoft Word
  • Practice all the basic skills needed for your first assignment
  • Create, save and print

Microsoft Excel Essentials

  • Unravel the mysteries of worksheets and workbooks
  • Manipulate data in cells and Auto-fill
  • Use basic formulas such as SUM and COUNTIF
  • Absolute and relative referencing
  • Chart wizard (Column Chart and Pie Chart)

Microsoft Excel Advanced

  • Format as Table and Sort/Filter data - download data for Test Result
  • Data Analysis Toolpack
  • IF function and advanced Excel formulas such as VLOOKUP - download data for Grade
  • Pivot Table and Pivot Chart

Microsoft Powerpoint Essentials

  • Create a simple slideshow featuring objects such as clip art, charts and cartoons

  • Format background with pre-set themes or your own images

Finding Books: Library Search Essentials

  • Learn about Library Search to find print and ebooks
  • Download the Library's ebooks
  • Develop keyword and subject searches

Finding Academic Articles

  • Understand journal references on reading lists or in bibliographies

APA Referencing Essentials

  • APA for books, edited books, journals, websites
  • Understand reference lists
  • Understand in-text citations (paraphrasing and direct quoting)

APA Referencing for Webpages

This tutorial assumes a basic understanding of APA Referencing.

  • APA for ebooks, ejournals, blogs, wikis, PPT, emails, social media, etc.
  • Critically evaluate websites and online publications

Getting Started with EndNote

Suitable for those new to referencing software. You will be guided through the basics of EndNote, step-by-step.

  • Create an EndNote Library
  • Add references to your library manually
  • Import records from Library Search, databases and Google Scholar
  • Use groups, search, and notes to organise references
  • Add and annotate PDFs
  • Use EndNote with a Microsoft Word document

Becoming Expert with EndNote

An advanced workshop for those who have attended Getting started with EndNote.

  • Curate your own personal library of literature using keywords, smart groups and other features
  • Adjust referencing styles according to publisher specifications or personal choice
  • Collaborate with other researchers by using shared libraries

NVivo for Data Analysis: Part A

This is an introductory workshop to NVivo and is ideal for those who are new to the software. You will learn about:

  • Fundamentals of setting up a project
  • Preparing and importing data various types of data (interview transcripts, field notes, Endnote libraries, pdf documents, MS Word documents, social media etc.)
  • Coding/Creating nodes
  • Introductions to queries and visualizations

NVivo workshops will be taught using NVivo 12 Pro for Windows.

NVivo for Data Analysis: Part B

This workshop is designed for those who are already familiar with the software. You will learn about:

  • Using attributes and classification features
  • Using visualization tools (Word Trees, Word Clouds and Cluster analysis) to tell a story about your data
  • Using coding queries to explore your data and report interesting findings from your analysis
  • Using NVivo with social media such as Facebook and twitter

NVivo workshops will be taught using NVivo 12 Pro for Windows.

NVivo for Literature Review

This workshop is oriented towards helping you learn excellent ways of managing large amounts of literature in a more organised manner. You will learn how to:

  • Use Endnote with NVivo
  • Prioritise your reading with query features
  • Make annotations and memos
  • Quickly get an overview of core ideas in your readings
  • Analyse metadata

NVivo workshops will be taught using NVivo 12 Pro for Windows.

Copyright and your Research

Learn how copyright affects all aspects of your research, from seeking permission to use others’ work, to knowing your rights when publishing.

  • Understand copyright in the academic environment
  • Third-party copyright: how to get the permissions you need
  • Use Creative Commons to share your research and control how it is used by others
  • Contracts and Intellectual Property: what you need to consider

Getting Started with your Literature Review

This workshop will kickstart your research process, providing expert advice on library databases and search strategies, as well as guidance on finding examples of theses and keeping current with the literature.

  • Learn how to use Library Search to find material for your literature review
  • Discover other databases the Library subscribes to which are relevant to your topic
  • Set up alerts so that the latest research is delivered to your inbox
  • Use Research Commons to find examples of other theses
  • Access the collections of other libraries using Interloans

Introduction to Research Data Management

This workshop will teach you the basics of Research Data Management. Learn the best ways to manage and protect your data, including backing up, storing, naming conventions, file types and citation.

Measuring and Maximising your Research Impact

Discover how to assess the impact your research is having. You will learn ways to disseminate your research effectively and maximise your chances of getting cited.

  • Bibliometrics and Altmetrics: what they are and how they can be used
  • How to maximise your citations and boost your impact

Publishing your Research

Learn how to decide which journals to publish in, maximise your chances of article acceptance and find out which publishing pitfalls to avoid!

  • Use Cabells White and Black lists to find reputable and highly-cited journals
  • Learn how to identify and avoid predatory publishers
  • Vanity publishing: what it is and how to avoid it
  • Understand the pros and cons of Open Access publishing
  • Learn how to find Open Access journals and how to publish in them

Raising your Profile

Understand the various ways in which you can manage your identity as a researcher online, as well as methods to boost your visibility and ensure you get credit for your work.

  • How to use academic and social networks such as, ResearchGate, Google Scholar to connect with other researchers and enhance your online profile
  • Use personal identifiers such as ORCID ID, Scopus ID and Researcher ID to ensure your work is being credited to you
  • Use these tools to ensure your work is as discoverable as possible and is reaching its intended audience

The Responsible Researcher

This workshop will help to prepare you to carry out your research in a responsible and ethical way.

  • Understand the principles of referencing
  • Referencing styles: tips, tricks and common mistakes
  • Enhance your knowledge of the central tenets of academic integrity and how this works in practice
  • Self-plagiarism: what it is and how to avoid it

Word for Theses and Long Documents

Essential for first year doctoral students.

  • Format margins, page numbers, fonts etc according to the UoW presentation guidelines
  • Use heading styles to ensure consistency, automate Table of Contents and streamline document navigation
  • Create automatic lists of figures and tables
  • Create captions for tables and figures
