Community and business leaders from Hamilton and the wider Waikato region were welcomed at Waikato University on April 1 to hear the organisation’s results.
The annual Stakeholders’ Breakfast is a chance for the community to hear about the University’s results for the previous year, its successes and upcoming challenges.
Guests included Hamilton Mayor Bob Simcock, Wintec head Mark Flowers, local principals, representatives from Environment Waikato, and local businesses such as Fletcher Construction, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Norris Ward McKinnon and Calder and Lawson Travel.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford told guests the University generated an $8.97 million surplus for the 2009 year, but that it was facing challenges such as rising costs and less government funding. The main contributors to the increased surplus were an extra nearly $6 million in major new research contracts and an extra $6.2 million from tuition fees due to growth in student numbers.
