The vision of the Unit for Responsible and Sustainable Management is to help the Waikato Management School be known nationally and internationally for its leadership in interdisciplinary research in areas of responsible and sustainable management, including environmental and social sustainability, and wellbeing.


Our mission is to initiate and facilitate research related to responsible and sustainable management by working with Waikato Management School faculty, and across disciplines with other relevant University of Waikato faculty and external organisations. We aim to generate cross-disciplinary research collaboration as well as dialogue with experts, professionals and policy makers within New Zealand and beyond. In doing so, we aim to help create new ways of understanding that transcends traditional research and practitioner boundaries that can work to address complex national and international sustainability issues.


Through the Research Unit, we will facilitate and co-ordinate interdisciplinary research in areas of responsible and sustainable management, internally within the Waikato Management School, and externally across the University of Waikato and internationally.

Through co-ordinated dissemination of relevant staff and student research, and of alumni activities, we will promote and build the profile of the Unit and WMS, expanding its potential for collaborative opportunities and building membership.

The Unit will facilitate a research seminar series that brings together WMS and other UoW Faculty members. These seminars will include, for example, discussions of relevant topics of interest; presentation of work in progress, including working paper development; presentation of views on funding ideas for feedback; presentation of ‘light bulb moments’. Through the seminar series, we will facilitate research mentorship of junior staff, offer opportunities for sharing of ideas more widely than otherwise feasible, and increase the range of interdisciplinary proposals put forward for funded research.
