Staff benefits

The University of Waikato is a great place to work. The parklike grounds of the Hamilton campus and the Tauranga CBD campus close to the harbour and shopping centre are great environments to explore, but there are other benefits you should be aware of.

Additional University holidays

In addition to the standard 20 days of annual leave and 11 days of public holidays every New Zealand worker is entitled to, the University provides an additional five days of leave - one on the Tuesday following Easter and the other four during the Christmas break when the University closes for a couple of weeks.

Leave Entitlements

Sick leave, parental leave and other entitlements are substantially more generous than are required under New Zealand legislation. Many staff have access to “as and when required” sick leave provisions to cover longer absences such as recovery from surgery and injuries.

Superannuation

New Zealand Universities have their own superannuation savings scheme called UniSaver. Employee contributions are matched by the University and, depending on contribution rates, exceed contributions staff would receive towards one of the national KiwiSaver schemes. If you are interested in joining, you should make an appointment to speak with our Payroll team, based in Human Resource Management.

Learn as you earn

Many staff can apply for a fees concession to take university papers or work toward degree qualifications. Time off work may also be allowed where classes occur during normal work hours. If you are interested in this then you should discuss with your manager to find out whether you are eligible.

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

The Employee Assistance programme is a free and confidential counselling and psychological support service for staff as and when they may need assistance. The University pays for staff and immediate family members, and there is a network of counsellors across New Zealand.

Wellness Programme

All staff may enjoy the benefits of the University’s wellness programme which includes discounted gym memberships, free flu vaccinations, physiotherapy consultations, seminars covering a wide range of topics, and more.

Discounted Insurance Schemes

While staff are covered by the national Accident Compensation Commission (ACC) scheme and public health systems some opt to purchase additional protection. The University has group membership discount schemes for Health, Life and Disability insurance through Southern Cross and Marsh.

Personal ICT Purchasing

The University of Waikato has partnered with PB Tech to provide corporate membership pricing for staff.

To receive the lower retail pricing, simply register for an account at www.pbtech.co.nz using your Waikato email and enter UoWStaff as the membership key. You will then receive an email to confirm you have joined the University membership group.

PB Tech have a help page on how to apply a membership key to your account / when creating an account herehttps://www.pbtech.co.nz/help/using-a-membership-key

Once joined, the prices you see on the website will already be discounted, rather than having a discount applied at the checkout.

2degrees offer a 15% discount on their mobile plans. See the details here.

Volunteering Day

Staff who are at least 0.5 FTE* are entitled to one day (or two half days) per year to undertake voluntary work in the community. The time needs to be negotiated with your line manager. See the Volunteer Service Policy for more information.

*FTE = Full Time Equivalent
