Kanohi ki te Kanohi: Introduction
Kanohi ki te Kanohi literally means face to face and is an opportunity to encounter Māori protocols and culture directly and to develop an understanding of important issues for a bicultural organisation committed to the Treaty of Waitangi.
Why are new kaimahi/staff invited?
The University is committed to welcoming new kaimahi onto the University Marae and providing training for all kaimahi so that they gain an understanding of the University’s aspirations and principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. This session aims to introduce the campus cultural narrative, provide a common basic understanding of the Treaty and the University’s Treaty Statement, Kīngitanga and associated concepts.
This session is available on the Hamilton campus. Line managers are invited to attend the pōwhiri to support their new kaimahi and the family of kaimahi are welcome to attend the pōwhiri section of this event.
This event is a pre-requisite for the 3-day Kanohi ki te Kanohi: Knowledge Connections which would normally be completed after kaimahi have been at the University for 12-18 months.
Who should attend?
All new kaimahi are expected to attend the one day programme in order to gain an understanding of the Treaty in accordance with the University's strategic objectives, but any kaimahi may attend as local needs allow. Any kaimahi who feel they already have a good understanding may still benefit from attendance and be able to make a valuable contribution to workshop discussion, so feel free to contact us to discuss this further if you wish.
