About Christopher
Chris leads the biorefinery and bioproducts programme within the Entrepreneurial Universities Macroalgal Biotechnology Programme. His research is multifaceted, broadly focusing on the conversion of cultivated algal biomasses into value-added products. There is a major focus on the development of innovative algal products produced sustainably in applications that transform people and their environment. These transformations primarily originate from products that target human and animal health and nutrition, sustainable agricultural practices, and sustainably produced biomaterials.
Research Supervised
Sulfated polysaccharides (ulvan) from Ulva ohnoi (Chlorophyta): Identifying parameters for structure-activity relationships (PhD, external)
Research Interests
Chris' research interests are in the development of biotechnologies from macroalgae. His current research focuses on algal product development and biorefinery processes targeting algal bioproducts. Current projects focused on using algal macromolecules, such as sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) and cellulose, to create a number of high performance algal products for use in functional foods, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and biotechnologies (e.g. wound dressing and tissue engineering).
