Adjunct Professor Chad L Hewitt
Qualifications: BA UC Berkeley, PhD Oregon
Professor Chad Hewitt was previously the Dean of the School of Science in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and is now a Research Professor. His research portfolio revolves around the role humans play in changing the natural world, particularly in marine systems, and how natural science can influence management and policy. He is recognised as a global expert on marine biological invasions and biosecurity governance at national and international levels with specific interests in risk perception, risk assessment and risk communication.
He has previously worked in academia as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at CQUniversity, and led the development of the National Centre for Marine Conservation and Resource Sustainability at the University of Tasmania/Australian Maritime College; in government as the Chief Technical Officer – Marine Biosecurity for the New Zealand Government, responsible for the management and implementation of the biosecurity system in the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone; and in the Australian CSIRO Marine Research in the Centre for Research on Introduced Marine Pests (CRIMP) as the Leader of the Invasion Processes Group.
