About Lara

Lara is Lecturer in Violin and Viola at the Conservatorium of Music. Chamber music, and baroque and classical performance practice are her key areas of expertise. Lara currently teaches students from undergraduate through to doctoral level.

Lara's work with the New Zealand Chamber Soloists, with whom she performs on both violin and viola, is a major focus of her concert work. She is passionate about teaching, and has fulfilled invitations to give master-classes institutions such as the Yong Siew Toh Academy of Music (Singapore), the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). Lara has recorded as a solo violinist and chamber musician for the Atoll and Naxos labels.

Lara has been prominent in the New Zealand music scene from a young age, performing when she was a teenager as a soloist with numerous orchestras including the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, St Matthews Chamber Orchestra and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and appearing at festivals such as the Adam New Zealand Festival of Chamber Music and the Auckland International Chamber Music Festival.

Lara was a student in the Dorothy Delay studio at the Aspen Summer School while completing her BMus at the University of Auckland. This was followed by postgraduate study in baroque violin with Graham McPhail.

She went on to gain her Masters and Doctorate in violin performance at the University of Michigan studying with Paul Kantor and Yehonatan Berick where she was a faculty member for the pre-university programme and taught University of Michigan college students as a Graduate Student Instructor. Her student years in the US saw her performing for renowned musicians, most notably the virtuoso violinist Ruggiero Ricci, from whom she received high praise.

Lara has led many orchestras including the National Youth Orchestra, Michigan Baroque Orchestra, Auckland Chamber Orchestra, and Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. She has been Concertmaster of Opus Orchestra since 2006. Lara has performed extensively as a concerto soloist with AK Barok (as a baroque violinist) and with Opus Chamber Orchestra, Auckland Chamber Orchestra, Waitakere Symphony Orchestra, and Tauranga Performing Arts Trust Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. Lara was appointed to her current position at the University of Waikato in 2006.
