About Māui

Māui affiliates to Te Whakatohea, Ngā Ruahine, and Te Māhurehure.  He is a member of the Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board, a director on Te Pou Oranga o Whakatōhea and Eastern Seafarms Ltd, as well as the Māori Advisory Group for He Mauri Ohooho: Māori Economic Development Strategy for the Bay of Connections.

Research Interests

Māori research ethics, traditional medicine, interface of mātauranga Māori and science, Māori innovation, Māori implementation science, Māori economic development, Māori health

Māui is an interdisciplinary researcher who focuses on the application of mātauranga Māori to decision-making across a range of contemporary contexts from new technologies to health, the environment to innovation. He leads projects funded through the HRC, MBIE and the National Science Challenges (Healthier Lives, Science for Technological Innovation) in collaboration with researchers from a range of units across the university (Environmental Research Institute, Māori and Indigenous Governance Centre, National Institute for Demography and Economic Analysis, Department of Management Communication) and beyond.

Māui supports Māori to engage in the research sector and advocates for opportunities through Te Mana Raraunga: Māori Data Sovereignty Network, Te Tira Rangahau Hauora (Māori researchers in the Health related National Science Challenges) and Te Waka o Tamarereti (Māori with expertise in Genomic, Informatics and Technology).
