Why study a MTchgLn?

This programme will develop your critical understanding of research-based pedagogical approaches, learning theory, inquiry skills and content knowledge to ensure you can effectively teach diverse learners in New Zealand schools.

You will also gain valuable practical experience with the professional support of Te Kura Toi Tangata School of Education lecturers and Mentor Teachers. This programme will provide you with a total of 80 days in the classroom, in two different schools.

Papers examine teaching in the New Zealand context, evidence-based inquiry, teaching diverse learners, and curriculum design and implementation. Students complete eleven 500 level postgraduate papers (180 points). The Master of Teaching and Learning is an intensive course aimed at high achievers and requires a higher entry criteria than the Graduate Diploma in Teaching.

Please Note: This programme builds on the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching with one extra 30 point paper.

Candidates for the secondary endorsement must have sufficient depth and breadth of relevant subject or curriculum knowledge at Levels 5-7. When you apply for the programme you will need to submit your degree transcript(s). The programme leader/coordinator will discuss and advise the appropriate programme once you reach the interview stage.

Te Kura Toi Tangata Secondary School Future Teacher Bursary

Study secondary teaching with the Division of Education at the University of Waikato and be considered for our new bursary, designed to assist secondary school student teachers in their studies. Recipients receive a $1,000 contribution towards their fees. Students are nominated at the time of interview. A student’s grade point average is also considered.
