Te Toka a Tirikawa - Māori Student Support
Nau Mai Haere Mai!
Te Toka a Tirikawa, our Māori mentoring unit, seeks to provide a holistic, proactive and inclusive service to make your educational journey as smooth as possible.
We provide support for all Māori students at our Tauranga Campus. Our friendly team of mentors are experienced university students who have “been there, done that” and who have achieved academically. Our team have a wealth of knowledge and advice to help you successfully navigate your academic journey.
The mentoring unit is also supported by our Māori Mentor Coordinator who is the first port of call for all Māori students.
If any questions or issues arise, at University or at home, please do not hesitate to reach out to anyone in the team.
As a Māori mentoring unit we provide comprehensive and culturally responsive support. A few examples of what support Te Toka a Tirikawa can provide our students are:
- Academic/ Referencing Support
- Scholarship Guidance
- Paper Selections
- Moral Support
- Study Skills and motivation
- Tangihanga Leave Requests
- Orientation of the campus
- Updating MyWaikato Details
- Navigating the Library and Moodle webpages
- Professional and personal development opportunities
If you require support that sits outside of our current capabilities, we will continue to support you by connecting you with our on- and off-campus services who do have the capacity to provide the support you require.
Te Toka a Tirikawa arrange events to bring our tauira together over shared kai and kaupapa. Getting involved in University events connects you with other students who can empathize, impart wisdom, and support you during your educational journey.

Mana Ake ki Tauranga Moana is a campus-wide tauira Māori roopu (Māori Student Group) for current students who want a space to whakawhanaunga with other like-minded Māori students.
Our roopu also coordinates events for our campus community including our joint semesterly Kaitahi with Te Toka, Kingitanga Day, supporting Te Wiki o te reo Māori initiatives and promoting Māori culture and identity on campus.
Our fortnightly hui provides a safe and inclusive space to wānanga over kai. Follow us on Instagram or Facebook to keep up to date with what we are doing in and around the campus.
We hope to see you soon!
