Research in Philosophy

Philosophy is about solving problems that confront us as we try to understand the world. It addresses ethical problems, problems about science, logic and the nature of reality.

A philosophy programme has been running at Waikato University since 1965. Since its inception, it has had a special relationship with the Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, and this has involved some joint teaching and research in the areas of logic and ‘Artificial Intelligence’.

Contemporary analytic areas, including language, mind, epistemology and metaphysics, are represented in the work of Dr David Lumsden, Dr Tracy Bowell, Dr Cathy Legg and Dr Justine Kingsbury. Dr Kingsbury also publishes in aesthetics.

Drs Liezl van Zyl, Ruth Walker and Nicholas Munn publish in Applied Ethics, Ethical Theory, and Political Philosophy.
