Still sexism exists…

There was a really regrettable incident happened at the Tokyo city government the other day.

みなさんも知[]っているかもしれませんが(= as you might know)、日本[にほん]は少子化[しょうしか] (= decrease in the number of children due to low birth rate)で困[こま]っています。

それは「お前[まえ] が結婚[けっこん]しろ(= why don't you get married)!」「子供[こども]が産[]めないのか(= can’t you give a birth)」といった野次[やじ]でした。

As you might know, Japan suffers from low birth rate. This is a complicated matter and you could name many reasons/causes behind it, but one of the reasons is lack of support to women in many respects.

So Ayaka Shiomura, a Tokyo city female councillor, used an opportunity to question about the supports from the government for childrearing at the assembly last week. During the session, some male councillors there shouted at her like “why don’t you get married?” and “cannot you give a birth?”.

This incident has caused a bit turbulence across the political world not only at Tokyo but also across Japan; even foreign media has reported this. Ms Shiomura officially made an complaint related to this incident but it was declined; the reason was that the person (people) in concern has not been identified. As far as I know, the city council or any political parties has not done any investigation to identify the hecklers. The media has reported that those unacceptable shouts came out from the area of the seats occupied by the LDP (Liberal Democratic Party, which is PM Abe’s party).

It is hard to believe we still have to hear this kind of news in the 21st century…    This incident has been reported at all sorts of places such as here.
