I had just become accustomed to the pace of "the city" - a casual reference to NYC sported by any common New Yorker. Six months into my exchange and my friend decided that I needed to experience the city as a tourist for a day. Glitter tattoos, I ♥ NY t-shirts and pretzels from the side of the road consumed in Central Park. But I had never felt like less of a tourist anywhere, Manhattan is the easiest place to blend and take pleasure in your own insignificance and anonymity.

Shortly after arriving in Japan, I had the opportunity to go to the Stars and Fire Rites Festival in Kyoto. Held every year on the 11th of February, the ceremonies pray for world peace as well as peace of the living and the deceased. Gazing upon majestic fire while listening to the pounding of the taiko drums made this an amazing experience that I will never forget.

This photo was taken at Fushimi Inari, one of the many famous shrines in Japans ancient capital of Kyoto and for me represents the deep history and culture that I experienced in Japan. The university was only about a 30 minute train ride to Kyoto so I spent almost half my weekends exploring Kyoto and its rich historical sites. The famous shrines like Fushimi Inari are often very busy with tourists and I was waiting a while for the path to be clear to take this shot, but just as I did these two little girls came running around the corner! I think it actually came out a better photo though because like a lot of things in Japan, you never know what surprising things might be just around the corner.

In this photo is one of the most famous temples in Vietnam but it’s a Chinese style located in District 5 “Cho Lon” or known as China Town in Vietnam. It’s dedicated to “Thien Mau”, the lady of the sea, who is also known as “Ma Zu”.
