About Us
The University of Waikato is located in the Waikato region on the North Island of New Zealand.
New Zealand has a worldwide reputation for being a welcoming and safe destination. Our region, the Waikato, means “flowing water” in the native Māori language. It was the name given to New Zealand’s largest river, and then to the province in which the University of Waikato is located.
Waikato University is dedicated to the success of its international students. Students from the Asia/Pacific region predominate, but there are a growing number of students from places such as Canada, Germany, India, and the USA.
The Waikato International Centre facilitates the initial application process of students and manages all of the ongoing student support, student exchanges with overseas partner universities, and the coordination of international activities and marketing.
The Centre specialises in several areas that assist students with their pre-departure, arrival and integration into the University, Hamilton and New Zealand. Staff are committed to providing excellent service to students and are always available to help. The office has a drop-in centre where international students love to meet and talk.
Services provided by the Waikato International Centre include:
- advising on enrolment and application procedures
- running an orientation programme
- acting as a referral point for other services in the University
- advice on visa requirements, student permit/visa renewals
- advice on medical and travel insurance
- ongoing seminar series
- temporary mail holding and student exchange coordination
Assistance with finding accommodation and airport pick-up is provided by the Accommodation Office. Student Counsellors are available for all international students. A Medical Centre is also located on campus, along with a pharmacy, and travel agent.
The Waikato International Centre hosts international visitors, coordinates University linkages and partnerships, and provides marketing support to an international network of representatives.
