Schools of Studies
The University of Waikato has seven 'Schools of Studies / Faculty' and one Pathways College.
Waikato Management School
The Management School is New Zealand's No 1 research-led business school and has an international reputation for excellence –
one of a small group of elite business schools
worldwide to have earned AACSB, EQUIS and
AMBA accreditation for its business education
programmes. It is an achievement shared by
fewer than 1% of business schools across
the world.
Faculty of Arts & Social
Sciences
In the last Performance-Based Research Funding
(PBRF) rankings, the Faculty was number one in Music, Literary Arts and Creative Art, and Media
Studies. Not only do students learn from staff
who are at the forefront in their fields both
nationally and internationally, but the University
provides venues and teaching rooms in the WEL
Academy of Performing Arts for the performance
programmes in music, theatre, dance and Māori.
School of Science and Engineering
The School's Bachelor of Engineering degree is
accredited by the institute of professional
engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) under the
International Washington Accord. Home to some of the most well-respected
researchers in the science and engineering
communities. We were ranked first in New
Zealand for the quality of our research in
chemistry, ecology, evolution, behaviour, and
molecular, cellular and whole organism biology, in the last PBRF ranking.
School of Computing and Mathematical
Sciences
The School is ranked #1 in
New Zealand for Computer Science and
Mathematics research and in 2008 the Computer Science
Department secured $7,000,000 in external
research funding. Alumni Craig Nevill-Manning devised semiautomatic
ways of extracting data from
existing websites for Google – and thus Froogle
was born.
School of Education
Number one School of Education in NZ for
education research with the largest number of doctorally qualified staff
of any School of Education in New Zealand. The School's flexible on-campus and online programmes are based on current theories in education and offer opportunities for real-life practical experiences. Our sought-after graduates establish successful careers in New Zealand and overseas.
School of Mãori and
Pacific Development
The School is renowned for delivering
distinctive quality education in Mātauranga
Māori / Māori knowledge, Mātauranga
Moananui-ā-Kiwa / Pacific knowledge and
Mātauranga Taketake / Indigenous knowledge. The School's Te Tohu Paetahi programme was the first
total immersion Māori programme to be
established at University level. Students vie for
70 places each year.
School of Law
The School has strong research interests in environmental law, international trade law, human rights law, resource management, corporate governance and law and information technology. Lecturers regularly advise government on policy and legislative reform and are members of international advisory groups.
Waikato Pathways College (WPC)
The College caters for much
of the university’s work with students which
is not focussed on the gaining of degree
qualifi cations. A range of programmes which
provide pathways to successful degree study
are offered, principally in Hamilton and
also in Tauranga. All of the English Language
programmes and Foundation Studies Programmes are incorporated into WPC as it
makes available leading experts and cuttingedge
research to the community.
