Labour Law in the spotlight
1 October 2009
Former labour minister and Attorney General Margaret Wilson will be presenting a paper at the International Society for Labour Social Security Law World Congress taking place in Australia next month (Sept 1-4).
Wilson is now Professor of Law and Public Policy at Waikato University. She'll be joining high profile labour law specialists at the four-day event in Sydney that will cover aspects of industrial relations and labour law systems in the current global financial crisis.
Prof Wilson will be talking about the evolution of New Zealand's employment relations institutional framework, arguing that while economic and social factors are important in the construction of frameworks, so is the ideological position of the government of the time. She suggests that increasing ideological positioning of the statutory frameworks has created instability and questions whether stability can be attained again.
The international congress will involve speakers from a range of different countries examining issues and problems of universal application. The chair of the US National Labor Relations Board Wilma B. Liebman will be giving the keynote address. She was appointed by President Obama in January this year and has served on the board since 1997.
The latest news bulletin for the congress can be found here.
