Waikato law students negotiate successfully on world stage
12 July 2011
Waikato law students Ben Gilbert and Andrew Cameron attended the International Negotiation Competition in Copenhagen and returned home winners. The pair represented New Zealand in the international event after winning the national negotiation championships in Dunedin last year.
They travelled to Denmark with their lecturer, coach and mentor Christina ter Haar and competed against teams from 19 other countries. The competition involves two law students representing a party or client and negotiating an international transaction or the resolution of an international dispute against another team of two.
The Te Piringa - Faculty of Law students won the 'Joint Maximising Plus Award' which acknowledged their negotiating skills and their achieving the best results for both sides in a negotiation. The ultimate award went to the team from Singapore.
Ms ter Haar says the students equipped themselves well and the experience of competing in a lively international environment can only enhance their future career opportunities. "It was also a wonderful way to profile Waikato University's Faculty of Law on an international stage."
