The Pacific Law Students Association (PLSA) is a student body made up of currently enrolled law students in both the Hamilton and Tauranga campus with diverse pacific island heritage. At the University of Waikato, our executive team is elected by those that make up this particular student body.
We operate with the aim of providing a strong support network for our students with the hope that it will continue long after tertiary study. We recognize the value in our cultural heritage and work together in order to promote unity, encourage motivation and inspiration for each other during our course of study.
There are events held throughout the year, both academic and social, that PLSA encourages each member to attend.
PLSA Meet and Greet
Open to all PLSA students of all levels. It provides a chance to mingle with fellow PLSA members and the Executive. A good way to start your networking and meeting new people whilst enjoying food in the sun.
The Mentoring programme
Now more commonly known as a ‘buddy system’, ensure continuity of support as well as accountability throughout the year. Sign ups will be taken during O'Week and the Meet and Greet. Our ratio will aim to be 1 senior to every 3/4 juniors.
Practical Law night
Key speakers are invited to talk about their experiences in the workplace and give tips to our students. The inaugural Practical Law night was held in September 2015 where we had lawyers from the Public Defence Services, returning clerks from Chapman Tripp and a partner from Tompkins Wake all present at the event.
In addition to building comradery students also get a chance to relieve stress and take a well deserved study break in a fun filled afternoon of volleyball and netball along with fellow Pacific friends in other faculties. An inter-faculty sports tournament that members of PLSA were involved in planning and setting up with great assistance from Pacific Student Support.
End of Year dinner
This provides the opportunity to recognize the achievements of students as they embark on the next phase of their career path. Family celebrations are important and the fabric of PLSA is based on the concept of family. Key note speakers are invited to instill some wisdom. The event is open to all PLSA students with the intention to also provide our first year students with something else to work towards and look forward to.
PLSA aims to provide a foundation of excellence for Pacific law students at the University of Waikato and to unite, support and celebrate the study of law by Pacific students; to establish bonds and networks with a range of staff and other students and promote and profile students' achievements and successes.
