The Green Guide has been produced jointly by the New Zealand Collection of the University of Waikato Library and the University's History Programme for over twenty five years. Its target audience was students attending courses in New Zealand History but it has been used by many other people since its first appearance. To date, the various editions have appeared in print with a variety of green covers (hence the name) illustrating different aspects of New Zealand life and history.
2011 marks a radical departure. The new edition will not appear in print but will be available as a web document through a link in the Library Catalogue.
The Guide has never pretended to be a comprehensive and exhaustive listing of works related to New Zealand History. Instead, it attempts to provide a broad introduction to the many strands that make up that history. The core of the Guide is made up of definitive (and timeless) works to which are added a selection of new titles which represent the latest research, trends and opinions.
Originally, the Guide only listed traditional published material but gradually the print forms have been supplemented by and now, in some cases, superseded by online versions. The Guide now offers a blend of the two.
This edition of the Green Guide has been revised in January 2011 by John Robson on behalf of the New Zealand Collection and the University of Waikato History Programme staff. Suggestions for improvements and alterations would be appreciated. Please advise any of the New Zealand Collection staff.
