My first week in Phnom Penh has been amazing! A bit of sightseeing, a few days at my new office and finally yesterday I moved into a nice big appartment and could unpack my bags.
I started the week with by attending an interesting meeting of the WatSan (water and sanitation) sector held at the Ministry of Rural Development and attended by representatives from the government and NGO's working or involved with improving water and sanitation issues in Cambodia. A great chance to meet people and find out what is happening in this sector.
Chinese new Year meant a lot of places closed for a couple of days so I got to have a look around the city, mostly on the back of a motorbike! Do a bit of shopping for duck, a popular dish to eat on the New Year and look for appartments and rooms to rent. I Finally found a nice big one shared with two 'expats' working in similar fields about two blocks from Tuol Sleng, where countless atrocities were committed during the Khmer Rouge period, and nearby to a lovely open sewer which runs for a several kilometres down the length of a street into the lake!
Had two days at my new office which is about 15-20 mins away from home. It is a really nice work space with really friendly Khmer co-workers. Mostly administration and orientation stuff the first two days, but next week I'm of to into the countryside for a few days to check out some of the projects! Can't wait!
