Māori students get a taste of life at Waikato University
30 September 2011
The Waikato Experience: Secondary students from various Waikato secondary schools attend the Kaupapa Māori Experience Waikato Day at Waikato University.
More than 120 Māori students from high schools around the Waikato were given a taste of life at the University of Waikato today.
As part of Kaupapa Māori Experience Waikato Day, the year 10 and 11 students were taken on a campus tour and shown the schools of study and Halls of Residence.
The day aims to introduce the students to the learning environment at the university within a Kaupapa Māori context. But unlike most Experience Waikato days, the Kaupapa Māori day adheres to strict tikanga Māori principles all day.
Students from Te Wharekura o Rākaumangamanga, Ngaruawāhia High School, Raglan Area School, Te Aroha College, Te Awamutu College, Tokoroa High School, Rangitahi College, Te Kauwhata College, Fairfield College and Melville High School were among the invited schools taking part.
This is the second year the University of Waikato has hosted the Kaupapa Māori Experience Waikato Day.
