Silver Fern Laura Langman and world rowing champion Nathan Cohen won two of the major awards at the 2011 Wallace Corporation University of Waikato Blues Awards on September 30.

Langman, also a Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic player, was named the Sportswoman of the Year, while Cohen was named the Sportsman of the Year. Langman has finished a Postgraduate Diploma in accounting and Cohen is studying toward a Bachelor of Management Studies.

The Pou Ahurea award for Māori Person of the Year went to opera singer Chase Douglas who is studying a Bachelor of Music. Composer and doctorate student Jeremy Mayall won the Creative and Performing Arts Person of the Year Award.

Langman, Douglas and Mayall are all Sir Edmund Hillary Scholars. The Hillary programme provides full fee scholarships to academic high achievers who show significant leadership qualities and also excel in either sport or the creative and performing arts.

More than 50 Blues Awards were given out to the University of Waikato’s top sporting and arts students. Award winners represented a range of disciplines, from dance and theatre to orienteering and table tennis.

This year marked the 40th anniversary of the Blues Awards. First awarded in 1971, the Blues Awards recognise the commitment and achievements of students in either sport or the creative and performing arts. A recipient from the first awards in 1971, Jeni Kydd, travelled from Taumarunui to attend the function and handed out the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards.

In other awards: The University of Waikato Debating Society was named the University Club of the Year; the University of Waikato Netball Club was named Sports Team of the Year; and Matthew Glenn won the Service of the Year Award.

Among the evening’s entertainment was a composition by Mayall which involved a live orchestra, fireworks, an aerial silk performer, and costumed actors.
