Hi all, well this should be my last communication before we are back from the field, we leave for Bratina Island at 2.20pm and 4.20pm (there are two helicopter flights down). After over a year of planning and preparation we are finally at crunch time!
It has been a long road to get to this point and in a weeks time we will know if the effort we have put in up until this point was enough, in Antarctic research preparation is 9/10ths of the law. We hope to collect about 140 filtered water samples (biomass) from 7 ponds at vairious depths throughout the ponds water columns, the filtered water is collected in tubes for elemental analysis as well as 15 litres of unfiltered water from one pond to create artificial systems, sediment cores from each pond will be taken and approximately 40 soil samples will also be taken. All in all this should fit into one large chilly bin for transportation back with us on the flight back to NZ. Over the next 10 days we are going to be working each day until we can stand it no longer, will eat, sleep and repeat all in freezing temperatures!
Talk to you in 10 days!
