Tainui Invest in the Future

20 September 1997
The Waikato Raupatu Lands Trust last night announced $1.2 million in scholarships to the University of Waikato.

The Tainui initiative will see 163 scholarships available over the next five years to students who are registered on the roll of beneficiaries of the Tainui Maaori Trust Board.

At the announcement, Hare Puke (Chairman of the Tainui Maaori Trust Board) spoke of Tainui's ongoing and enduring journey, which focuses not on the past but on a future that recognises the value of education. "We have a commitment to the future. We look forward to the accomplishment of the schools. We have to direct our students into education, which is the salvation of Waikato and Tainui," Mr Puke said.

The offer by Tainui has been welcomed by the Chairman of the University of Waikato Foundation and Chancellor, Gerald Bailey, at a function held on campus. "This is a very substantial commitment to education by Tainui, and a very welcome contribution towards the 'Campaign for Waikato'."

The Waikato Raupatu Scholarships join scholarships from MDC Investments Ltd (Maori Development Corporation) as part of University of Waikato Foundation's 'Campaign' which will be officially launched next year. "The Campaign will seek to establish many new Scholarships and Fellowships, and we could not have had a more welcome start to our endeavours," said Mr Bailey.

The Waikato Raupatu Scholarships reward high levels of academic achievement at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels. Next year 55 scholarships will be available. Up to 26 undergraduate students will each receive $2500 per annum, 26 Masters students will receive $5000 each, while three Post Graduate students will receive $12,000 (plus fees) per student.

Tainui students from the Schools of Management Studies, Science & Technology, Computing & Mathematical Sciences, Education, Humanities, Social Sciences and The School of Law can apply for the Waikato Raupatu Scholarships. The MDC/School of Maori and Pacific Development Scholarships are available to any New Zealand student studying in the School of Maori and Pacific Development.

Applications for 1998 scholarships close October 31,1997 and registration forms are available from the student reception at the University of Waikato Gateway building.
