Research Interests

The research interests of Dr Foroutan cover a number of issues. Due to his university training in both Demography and Sociology, his research focus is mainly on social demography. From a socio-demographic perspective, his research interests deal with gendered demography, labour force (particularly, women’s employment), migration and ethnicity, culture and religion. In addition to these, his more recent research interests include the strategy of socialization (particularly, gender socialization) through educational institutions with a demographic emphasis.

About Me

Dr Yaqub Foroutan is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA), the University of Waikato. Dr Foroutan completed his PhD in Demography at the Demography & Sociology Program (presently, the Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute), The Australian National University (ANU), Canberra, Australia. His doctoral research examining demographic patterns and determinants of women’s market employment with specific focus on the effects of migration, ethnicity and religion (particularly, Muslim immigrants) has been awarded The W. D. Borrie Essay Prize by The Australian Population Association. He also holds a BA in Social Sciences, a MA in Sociology and a MA in Demography from Tehran University.

From 1995 to 2002, Dr Foroutan was a lecturer of Demography at the Department of Social Sciences, The University of Mazandaran (UMZ) in the north of Iran, where he also took positions as the Head of Library of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (1995-96) and the Deputy of the Dean of the Faculty in Finance and Administration (1997-98). Upon completion of his PhD at the ANU in mid-2007, Dr Foroutan resumed his position at the UMZ as Assistant Professor, which was continued until mid-2010. Dr Foroutan has also been awarded twice at the UMZ for Excellence in Research and Teaching in 2001 and more recently in 2009. Since July 2010, he joined the NIDEA at The University of Waikato.

Dr Foroutan has published a large number of research articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Population Research, International Migration Review, Immigrants and Minorities, South Asia Research, Asian Journal of Women’s Studies, Australian Religion Studies Review, and Fieldwork in Religion. He also wrote a chapter on the association between gender and religion in the edited book titled The World’s Religions: Continuities and Transformations edited by Peter Clarke and Peter Beyer published by Routledge in 2009. Dr Foroutan has published a book entitled “Society and Population: An Introduction to Sociology of Population” [translated in Persian], Babolsar: University of Mazandaran Press (2001). He also presented research papers in a large number of international conferences including those organized by the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), Population Association of New Zealand (PANZ), Australian Population Association (APA), Population Association of Iran (PAI), Population Association of America (PAA), the International Society for Sociology of Religion (ISSR), and the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS). As part of his scientific commitment, Dr Foroutan also contributes to reviewing submitted papers for academic journals and he has already served as a referee for peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Population Research, International Migration, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Review of Religious Research, and Journal of Sociology.
