Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Application Form

 

Please note: Applying for the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship requires you to obtain various documents depending on your situation. We recommend you complete this application well in advance to establish the requirements.

Most applicants will need to send hard copies of some information to the University of Waikato Scholarships Office. You MUST ensure that you post these in time for them to reach the Office by 01 October 2014

Eligibility

Applicants must excel in either a chosen sporting code or a creative and performing art. Please note that you may only apply under one category ie. sport or art. Please ensure you are specific with your choice i.e. Music - Cello or Rugby Union, not just Sport or Art.

Supporting Documents

All applicants are required to submit supporting documentation, either in Word or PDF. Please note that your attachments should not exceed 3MB each otherwise the form will be unable to submit your application.

Curriculum Vitae
A curriculum vitae that, in addition to the typical catergories, includes the following:
  • a list of any relevant certificates/prizes/awards you have received
  • a brief summary of any publicity regarding your accomplishments e.g. Waikato Times, 9 Sept 2012, brief article about my success
  • any other information which you feel may be helpful to the Selection Panel

Personal Statement
A personal statement (maximum 2 pages) that briefly presents the following:
  • best performance to date and why
  • future aspirations for your creative or sporting endeavours
  • leadership & community involvement


NCEA Record of Achievement

A PDF version of your NCEA Record of Achievement. This must be obtained from your the official NZQA website https://secure.nzqa.govt.nz/for-learners/records/login.do

Students complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme should attach an outline of their programme of study, and a reference from their secondary school giving indicative grades. Students who have completed the Cambridge International Exams should scan their CIE results and attach.


References & Additional Information

You must arrange for the following information to be sent to the University of Waikato Scholarships Office by 01 October 2014.

    It should be accompained by a completed coversheet which outlines the documents you are supplying.

  • Principal's Assessment Form.
    Please arrange for your secondary school principal to complete the Principal's assessment form by 01 October 2014.
  • A sporting or creative / performing art Reference.
  • Please arrange for an referee relevant to your chosen sporting code or creative/performing art to complete a reference that addresses your abilities, potential to excel and your leadership qualities.
    It should be accompained by a completed coversheet which outlines the documents you are supplying.

  • Records of study undertaken in the past
  • A second reference.
    This reference should be from a professional who can attest to your leadership qualities and ability to maintain academic standards while pursuing your creative or sporting endeavours.
  • Verified copies of academic transcripts from your most recent tertiary study.
  • Creative/Performing Arts Students Only:
  • Creative/Performing Arts applicants should include copies of creative works or recordings of performances. Dance, screen and media, music and theatre studies students are required to submit a CD, DVD or USB containing recordings of performances/examples of work. This is optional for other arts applicants.

Important notes regarding hard copy attachments

All attachments will be scanned and distributed to Selection Panel members.

  • Do not send originals as documents will not be returned.
  • All documents should be A4 in size, smaller documents should be copied on to A4 paper.
  • Attachments should consist of loose pages clipped in one corner by a paper clip
  • Colour printing is unnecessary as all applications will be scanned in black and white

Fine Print

The information provided in this application will be used solely for the purposes of assessing your eligibility and suitability for the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship. Personal information contained in this application will be made available to members of the Sir Edmund Hillary Selection Panel, members of the Sir Edmund Hillary Executive Group, members of the Scholarships Committee and staff of the Scholarships Office. The Selection Panel may consult on a confidential basis with representatives of relevant sporting or creative agencies to assess the standing of any achievements listed in your portfolio. Should you be offered a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship, information on your academic achievements will be made available to members of the Sir Edmund Hillary Executive Group during the tenure of your Scholarship.

The University of Waikato will securely store your application electronically. Should you have reason to believe that information held about you in either your application or your academic record is incorrect, you have the right of access to, and correction of, that information.

The University may contact the persons you have named in your application as referees for further information. Any such direct contact with these referees will be made on a strictly confidential basis. The University may not divulge details to you about the content of such confidential references without the written authorisation of the referee concerned.
