Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource (STAR)
What is STAR?
The Ministry of Education’s Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource (STAR) funding is a capped resource available to secondary, composite, area or special schools that have Years 11 to 13 students. It is not available to private schools and foreign fee-paying students and adult students are not included in STAR funding calculations.
The intention of the grant is to enable secondary schools to facilitate their senior students’ smooth transition from schooling to further education, training or employment. It enables secondary schools to provide or purchase tertiary courses which will better meet students’ needs.
Private schools can enrol students in STAR offerings; however they are not entitled to STAR funding. The fees are slightly higher and these schools are required to ensure their students are fully enrolled and have paid all relevant fees before they are able to participate in classes. Secondary schools that are not STAR funded come under a contractual agreement which differs to the STAR contract.
For more information on STAR funding, visit the Ministry of Education website.
Papers completed under STAR arrangements may be credited towards University of Waikato undergraduate degrees.
More information can be found in the current UniSTARt - University Papers for Secondary School Students brochure or the 2016 UniSTARt brochure.
