Postgraduate Studies

The University of Waikato's research is as wide ranging as that of any university in New Zealand: from software engineering, Maori development and creative industries to business, social policy and environmental science, from law to children's learning and more. Each faculty or school of study in the University has individual students and teams of students working with academic staff on numerous projects covering a range of topics, many of which are externally funded through the Public Good Science Fund, the Marsden Fund, or other government agencies and commercial organizations.

The University's postgraduate students work towards the degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Doctor of Education (EdD). Most are based on the University's campus, while others undertake research part-time while continuing their work or profession.

The Postgraduate Studies Office provides support and advice to all students and staff involved in research-based postgraduate degrees. This website presents information for prospective and current students, for supervisors and examiners, and for other academic and administrative staff.

The staff of the Postgraduate Studies Office welcome the opportunity to discuss academic and administrative processes on an individual basis with prospective students, enrolled students or members of staff.

All postgraduate students enrolled in the University are provided with the opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding which will enable them to make their own original contributions to the well being of New Zealand, the Pacific region, and the international community. In addition, the University seeks to make the research experience enjoyable and intellectually stimulating for all who make the commitment to its rigour and standards.

Fees

The New Zealand Government and the New Zealand Universities have adopted a policy allowing new international PhD students to pay domestic fees from 1 January 2006, where the student's research is being supervised by a leading researcher in the student's area of study and the student is living in New Zealand for the duration of their study.
