Revisions to Thesis
Revisions recommended by external examiners
Revisions before the oral examination
Revisions after the oral examination
In all higher degree thesis examinations the external examiners' reports are directed in the first instance to the Postgraduate Studies Office and are not disclosed to any third party until approved for action by the Postgraduate Studies Committee. The action that follows is dependent upon the approved recommendation.
Revisions before the oral examination
Minor Revisions
External examiners may signal in their reports that although the thesis is recommended to proceed to oral examination, minor revisions to the thesis will be required. Under these circumstances the thesis proceeds to oral examination where the extent of the revisions is decided and a time limit for their completion imposed.
Major Revisions
Where major revisions are recommended before the oral examination, candidates are invited to re-enrol for a minimum of six months to complete the revisions before resubmitting the thesis for re-examination.
On receipt of the external examiner's report the Postgraduate Studies Committee will advise action as follows to be taken by the Postgraduate Studies Office:
| Examiners' recommendation | Advice to supervisor | Advice to candidate |
Proceed to oral examination minor revisions required |
Thesis should not proceed to oral examination major revisions requiring re-enrolment, resubmission, and re-examination |
Thesis is not accepted for the PhD, but accepted as fulfilling requirements for MPhil / MEd revisions of a minor nature, principally the correction of typographic errors |
Revisions after the oral examination
Following the oral examination the examiners may recommend revisions as follows:
| Examiners' recommendation | Advice to candidate* |
Thesis accepted - subject to the candidate completing substantial amendments within ten weeks of the examination |
Thesis not accepted - major revisions requiring re-enrolment, re-submission and re-examination. No further oral examination is held and no further revisions permitted after the re-examination. |
| * A copy of the letter sent to the candidate is also provided to the supervisor | |
