General Information
General regulations for graduate degrees within the University are published in the University of Waikato Calendar and students should familiarise themselves with these. The following brief summary of requirements relates particularly to the Postgraduate Diploma and Master of Māori and Pacific Development with a major in Development Studies.
Degrees Offered
Postgraduate Diploma in Māori and Pacific Development (PGDipMPD)
The PGDipMPD is a four-paper qualification equivalent to 120 points at Level 5, normally completed over one year of full-time study. The diploma consists of four core papers, although elective options may be considered depending on the student's undergraduate background. Entry requires a bachelor's degree or its equivalent, with at least a B+ average. Students should have completed the undergraduate major in M¯aori and Pacific Development, or have majored in a related field such as Anthropology; Economics; Geography; Law; Management Studies; Pacific Studies or Political Science and Public Policy.
Note: All four core papers for the PGDipMPD with a major in Development Studies will be available on-line as well as on-campus in the respective semesters.
Core Papers
The following core papers are strongly recommended for a major in Development Studies. Students with an undergraduate major relevant to one of these papers may have the option of selecting an alternative paper, with approval from the Chairperson. Students must complete the minimum number of required papers within the Department of Development Studies for the major. See the University of Waikato Calendar for further details.

Master of Māori and Pacific Development (MMPD)
The MMPD is a four-paper degree equivalent to 120 points at Level 5, normally completed over one year of full-time study, although a part-time option is available. The degree usually consists of a dissertation equivalent to 60 points (2 papers) and two 30 point papers, which may be taken outside the department in a related field of study. Entry requires a Postgraduate Diploma, BA(Hons) or equivalent in a relevant field of study with a minimum of a B+ average. The degree caters particularly for students who have completed the PGDipMPD.
Elective Papers
Students have the option of taking up to two papers outside the department, with the approval of the Director in consultation with the Course Advisor of Development Studies, the Chairperson and/or Course Convenor of the relevant department. Chosen electives must be appropriate to the overall focus of the programme described earlier. Students who enter the programme with a relevant major other than Māori and Pacific Development will be given the opportunity to pursue a research topic and take two electives in their chosen field of specialisation. Students intending to take electives in another department as part of their MMPD should ensure they have met the prerequisites for those papers in their undergraduate studies.
Master of Philosophy
The MPhil is normally a one year full-time research degree. Entry requires a diploma or masters degree or equivalent with at least 2nd class honours.
Doctor of Philosophy
The DPhil is a minimum two year full-time research degree, and normally takes three years. A part-time option is available. Entry requires a Masters degree or equivalent, with at least 2nd class honours 1st Division.
Initially students should receive the appropriate documentation (Application
for MPhil or PhD and Department Handbook) from the Departmental Administrator
and arrange an appointment to see the Director of the Department of Development
Studies regarding their proposed research. Applicants are recommended
to obtain a copy of the "Handbook for Research Degrees of MPhil,
PhD and EdD at The University of Waikato" available from the Postgraduate
Studies Office at the Gateway, or from the Department of Development Studies.
Applicants will be advised by the Director as to the appropriate documentation
and steps to follow after the initial appointment.
