Te Tohu Paerua
Masters Programme (other than MPhil)
Students enrolled in Māori for the MA degree must gain 120 points at Level 5 (the equivalent of four papers). Students are required to include a dissertation equivalent to 60 points (2 papers), plus a further 60 points at Level 5 (two taught papers) approved by the Department, or a thesis equivalent to 120 points (four Level 5 papers).
Candidates enrolled in the MMPD must gain 120 points comprising two 30 point papers and a dissertation equivalent to 60 points (2 papers), a thesis equivalent to 90 points (3 papers) plus one further L5 paper, or a thesis equivalent to 120 points (4 papers).
If a candidate is unable to complete their dissertation or thesis within the prescribed enrolment period, the supervisor and candidate should inform the Graduate Convenor, so that a continuing grade can be entered. This enables the candidate to re-enrol the following year or semester to ensure completion of their research paper.

A dissertation is a piece of written work presented in terms of the regulations for a first Masterate degree. It is generally in lieu of one or two papers (30 or 60 points respectively at Level 5), and embodies research or other work not considered by the Chairperson of Department concerned as being appropriate for inclusion in the Union List of Theses. Therefore a dissertation is restricted in its circulation.
Dissertations are not required to be bound. Two copies are required and the Department concerned for a minimum of six months retains these. No copy is held in the University Library, other than in particular cases at the special request of the Chairperson of Department, in which case the Department concerned will meet the cost of appropriate presentation in a form similar to that for a thesis.

A thesis is a piece of written work presented in terms of the regulations for a first Masterate degree (excluding the MPhil). It is equivalent to 90 points at Level 5 (3 papers), or 120 points at Level 5 (4 papers), or a piece of written work undertaken in accordance with the regulations for a MPhil or PhD degree (the difference among these being one of level and/or scope). A thesis embodies research or other work of a kind and standard considered appropriate by the Chairperson of Department concerned for inclusion in the Union List of Thesis. Therefore it will be available to persons from outside the University.
Three copies are required to be lodged, and the University Library holds two of these. The third copy is a Departmental copy. The Department will cover the marginal cost of preparing the third copy.
