Supervisor Conversation: Examining Research Theses

This session will be of interest to staff who are, or who anticipate, examining doctoral theses, and those who are supervising candidates who will be submitting in the near future.

The session aims to:

  • Discuss issues related to the thesis examination system
  • Work through the strategies adopted by experienced and inexperienced thesis examiners
  • Identify strategies recommend for effective examination in the oral component

Margaret Kiley’s research and teaching interests for almost 20 years have been in the area of research education. She is now an adjunct at the Australian National University and has a conjoint position at Newcastle University, Australia.

Presenter: Dr Hugh Kearns
Te Mata Kairangi, School of Graduate Research invites you to Research Supervision Master Class presented by Hugh Kearns from iThinkwell, Adelaide, Australia.  Hugh Kearns is recognised internationally as a public speaker, educator and researcher. He regularly lectures at universities across the world and has recently returned from lecture tours of the UK and the US which included lectures at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Berkeley and Stanford.
This masterclass will look at how to help both the supervisor and the student get the most out of the post-graduate research experience. It draws on the facilitator’s experience of working with thousands of research students and research supervisors across the world and there is also the opportunity for supervisors to share their experiences of what works and what doesn’t.
It will cover issues such as:
·       Dealing with different types of students
·       Getting students to write
·       Getting students to show you their writing
·       Giving constructive feedback
·       Students who write too much
·       Students for whom English is not their first language
·       Motivating stalled students
·       Problem situations.

Registrations are essential, all Supervisors are welcome.
