What to do, and what not to do (formal language)

Shaun says you should avoid:
Contractions | slang or idiom | first person (I, me, my) | personal examples | overly emotional language | addressing your reader directly | and statistics without reference.

However, you should use:
The impersonal passive | academic vocabulary.
