Student Learning: Grammar

Using capitals - with book titles

  1. 2.4 Book titles:

Capitalisation is important when writing out the titles of works such as books, journal articles or reference material. This varies a little depending on the referencing system you are using, but a useful general rule is to capitalise all first letters except short insignificant works such as the, a, to, at, by, of, etc.
Note: After a colon in a title the next word always starts with a capital letter, and hyphenated words are treated as one word.
