Dr E. Marcia Johnson

Originally from Canada, I joined Student Learning as its Director in January 2008. I have a PhD in educational technology from the University of Toronto and have taught both computers in education and applied linguistics in Canada, Japan, and New Zealand. My current research includes tertiary level eLearning, technology use in language teaching, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Andrea Haines

Ms Andrea Haines, J.P.

Team Leader

I have worked in the learning development field since 1990. My current role is Team Leader in Student Learning in which I work closely with the director on strategic directions for our unit. My specific focus is Student Learning's provision of one-to-one consultations and support for graduate and higher degree students through targetted workshops in Faculties and the Doctoral Writing Conversations initiative. Outside the university a major interest is the promotion of film culture in New Zealand. I serve as a Justice of the Peace on campus.

Dr. Claire Leschi

Dr Claire Leschi

Mathematics tutor

Dr Claire Leschi is our new maths tutor. She has taught maths in both secondary and tertiary contexts and has a strong background in teaching bridging maths for university students.
Claire is interested in meeting academic staff across the university and gathering information about the types of maths topics embedded in their programmes of study and the maths knowledge and skills that students tend to find challenging.

Katherine Gilliver-Brown

Student Learning Senior Tutor
Ms Katherine Gilliver-Brown

I come from a background in Applied Linguistics, and have taught at the University since 2001, but joined Student Learning at the end of 2008. My role as eLearning Coordinator is provision and maintenance of electronic resources, especially tools that enhance grammatical and linguistic independence. I have developed a web-based self-access grammar product, and have just released an interface providing access to excerpts of student assignments demonstrating the features that contribute to the quality of a piece of writing.

Dawn Marsh

Student Learning Senior Tutor
Ms Dawn Marsh

I have had a long association with the University of Waikato, so joining the Student Learning team felt like a home-coming. I completed my undergraduate degree in the 1990s and tutored in social science, education and bridging programmes before working in administration, journalism and librarianship. I am committed to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to succeed in tertiary study. Learning development is a partnership and my role is to work with you one-on-one, as well as on the range of workshops and programmes we offer to develop study and academic writing skills.

Marie-Christine Wells

Student Learning Senior Tutor
Ms Marie-Christine Wells

I started working for Waikato University in 1999. Prior to (and during) this time I have taken time out to work in a variety of cultures, developing culturally and pedagogically appropriate academic literacy in various tertiary institutions. I encourage students to be critical thinkers; to reflect on, and apply, appropriate new concepts to their existing knowledge, and construct their own understanding; to move away from egocentric and sociocentric attitudes to more cosmopolitan attitudes that will help to make the necessary changes – individual and societal – to keep abreast with globalisation.

Dean Ballinger

Student Learning Senior Tutor
Dr Dean Ballinger

My academic background at the University of Waikato has been in the arts and humanities. I studied to Masters level in Media Studies and English, and returned as an adult student to undertake a doctoral degree in media studies, researching in the very interesting area of conspiracy theories. I have extensive experience in tutoring and lecturing which flows nicely into work at Student Learning. As a cartoonist I have also been pleased to provide the illustrations for the revamp of the Academic Integrity course which Student Learning presents on Moodle.
