2012 Admission and Enrolment Frequently Asked Questions

All students are strongly encouraged to apply by 1 December 2011 for admission to the University of Waikato in 2012.

For Potential Students

Do I risk losing a Halls deposit if I don’t get in to university?
No.

Will the Halls of Residence confirm accommodation without a firm offer for the student?
The Halls offer accommodation on the assumption that the student will be accepted into the University of Waikato.

Where can I get information on student loans?
www.studylink.govt.nz or 0800 88 99 00

When I get my firm offer, do I get my student id then?
No. You will need to sign, pay (or indicate payment method) and return your Enrolment Agreement to the University to receive a student id card.

What if I miss out on a place but offer to pay full fees (like an international student)?
This is not possible as the University is required to process all students within Ministry of Education-specified categories and this scenario (domestic student paying international fees) is not possible.

Is studying online an option if I miss out on a place?
No. Online study counts towards the overall university student enrolments exactly the same as an on campus student.

Am I being accepted as a “student at Waikato” or into a particular course?
Acceptance is based on the application submitted for a particular qualification.

Why do you want me to enrol for the whole year?
So that you only have to apply for loans/allowances (if being used) once and also so you only have to go through the enrolment process once per year (Changes are allowed for B semester as per the Change of Enrolment regulations). It also helps the University to know how many places are committed for the year, which is important in the capped funding environment universities are working within.

I want to do only one paper – how can I enrol?
By completing an application to enrol and submitting it with all relevant supporting documentation (citizenship evidence, admission reason evidence, etc) by the relevant deadline.

Where can I get individual advice? Who can I talk to?
The student recruitment advisers. Phone 0800WAIKATO and make an appointment.

I want to do a certificate or diploma. Will degree students get priority over me?
The university is working from a set criteria but undergraduate and graduate certificate or diploma students receive the same priority as degree students. Postgraduate Certificates/Diplomas are treated in the same priority as Masters or Honours students.

How do the priorities affect people transferring from other institutions?
Students transferring should apply before the 29 January 2012, or 1 December 2011 if applying for Summer School 1, Law or Teacher Education.

Can I come in to complete my enrolment on campus?
Yes. You can visit the Student Administration desk, located in the Student Centre, Level 2 of the library at our Hamilton Campus.

Does my school career adviser have lots of information?
Yes.

When do I need to complete my enrolment by?
All new and returning students must complete their enrolment by the following dates:
16 December 2011 for papers commencing 1 January to 4 March 2012 (Summer School).
24 February 2012 for papers commencing 5 March to 15 July 2012 (A semester).
6 July 2012 for papers commencing 16 July to 31 December 2012 (B semester).
The Friday prior to the start date of a Corporate and Executive Education programme.
The Friday prior to the start date of a thesis enrolment.

For Current Students

I’m enrolled on a CUP course at the moment – can I get a place next year at Waikato?
Yes. You must successfully complete all four papers to be eligible and submit your application before 29 January 2012.

Are there restrictions on course numbers for 2012?
Yes. Your Faculty can advise you of any potential restrictions for your programme.

When do I need to apply to return to Waikato?
Before 29 January 2012. Apply online at www.waikato.ac.nz.

When will I know I have been accepted for another year?
Once your application has been received and re-entry for admission has been checked (anytime from 30 November 2011 depending on time of application being submitted), and your Faculty/School have considered your programme of study.

How much do I have to pass to secure an ongoing place?
For most programme you must pass at least 50% but some programmes have higher requirements. You can make an appointment to discuss this with your relevant Faculty/Department.

I’m thinking of having a semester off next year, how will that affect my place?
We recommend you apply by 29 January 2012 even if you are starting in B Semester.

Is Waikato accepting postgrad enrolments for 2012?
Yes. Postgraduate applications are being encouraged as per the University’s commitments and strategy.
