Undergraduate Entry Requirements

Entrance Guidelines for Students from Selected Countries

The following admission guidelines do not guarantee entry into a programme of studies. Each application is assessed on a case-by-case basis. If your qualification or country is not listed, please contact international@waikato.ac.nz

New Zealand
The University of Waikato Certificate of Attainment in Foundation Studies; or successful completion of a recognised Foundation Studies programme; or successful study in an approved programme at a University of Waikato articulation partner.
International
Grades of 3 or higher in each of at least 4 subjects in the Advanced Placement International Diploma (APID).
International
(Exam taken in NZ)
A or AS levels with a minimum of 120 points on the UCAS Tariff and a minimum grade of D in each of 3 subjects equivalent to those in the Approved Subject List in the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) or Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE). If outside of New Zealand, the entry requirements below apply.
International
When taken in countries other than the UK, applicants must gain at least a C grade in each of three GCE Advanced Level papers. A result in General Studies cannot be included among the three on which the application is based.
International
Completed International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma (24 points minimum).
Australia
Completion of Year 12 with a Tertiary Entrance Rank that satisfies The University of Waikato admission requirements AUSMAT / SAM 83%.
Bangladesh
Successful completion of a three-year Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Bachelor of Science (Honours) or Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from a recognised University; or one year successful study towards a Bachelor of Science (Engineering) at a recognised* University.
Brazil
One year successful study at a recognised* institution of university standing.
Canada
Average of 60% across six subjects (including English) in the Grade 12 High School Diploma.
Chile
One year successful study at a recognised institution of university standing.
China
Successful completion of Senior High School Graduation plus one year successful study at a recognised* institution of university standing; or two years’ successful academic study at a recognised* Junior College.
Colombia
Successful completion of Tecnólogo Especializado at a recognised* tertiary institution; or one year of successful study at a recognised institution of university standing.
Denmark
Studentereksamen with an average grade of 6.0 or better; or Hojere Forberredelseseksamen with an average grade of 6.0 or better; or Hojere Teknisk Examen; or Hojere Handelseksamen.
Fiji
USP Foundation Year, with 7 passes with a minimum of a C in Communication; or Fiji Form Seven, with a score of 250 or better with passes in 4 subjects plus a 50% or better in English; or South Pacific Form Seven Certificate (SPFSC) with a minimum of 3 B grades.
Finland
Successful completion of Ylioppilastutkinto; or Studentexamen; or Teknillisen Koulon Paastotodistus; or Teknikko at a Vocational School or recognised* tertiary institution.
France
Baccalaureat de L’Enseignement du Second Degre with a minimum of 10; or Diplome de Bachelier de L’Enseignement du Second Degre with a minimum of 10.
Germany
Successful completion of Abitur or Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife.
Ghana
West African GCE Advanced Level examinations with at least three C grades. All passes must be gained in the same sitting.
Hong Kong
Successful completion of the first two years of study towards a Diploma at Shue Yan College; or Hong Kong Advanced Level Examinations with at least three C grades. All passes must be gained in the same sitting.
India
All India Senior School Certificate or Higher Secondary School Examination with a minimum grade average of 75% including English 60%. Students with other qualifications should seek further information.
Indonesia
One year of successful study at a recognised* University; or successful completion of a Diploma II from a recognised tertiary institution; or an overall average of 8.5 or more in SMU.
Japan
Kotogakko Sotsugyo Shomeisho with a B grade average.
Korea
Successful completion of a two-year Diploma at a recognised* Junior College; or a Diploma at a recognised* Junior Vocational College.
Kuwait
Successful completion of General Secondary Education Certificate with an overall average of 80% (calculated over academic subjects only).
Malaysia
Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) with at least three C grades; or Unified Examination Certificate of the Malaysian Independent Chinese Secondary School system with a maximum of 15 points over six academic subjects, including one of Chemistry, Physics or Advanced Mathematics.
Netherlands
VWO – Gymnasium A or B; VWO – Atheneum A or B with a minimum average of 6.0.
Nigeria
Successful completion of Advanced National Technical Certificate at a recognised* tertiary institution; or Advanced National Commercial Certificate at a recognised* tertiary institution.
Norway
Successful completion of the Vitnemal fra den Videregaende Skole.
Oman
One year of successful study at a recognised institution of university standing.
Saudi Arabia
Successful completion of a Diploma at a College of Technology recognised by the University of Waikato; or one year of successful study towards a Bachelor degree at a university recognised by the University of Waikato
South Africa
Applicants must have complied with the matriculation requirements of the South African Certification Council and have achieved an aggregate of at least C, with at least a D in English, in the Matriculation Certificate or Senior Certificate.
Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan GCE Advanced Level examinations with an aggregate score of at least 180 out of 400, at least passing grades (S) in three of the subjects sat and a grade of at least 25% in the fourth subject.
Sweden
Successful completion of Avgangsbetyg or Slutbetyg – Teknisk Linje.
Switzerland
Successful completion of Kantonale Maturitate, Maturité Cantonale or Maturita Cantonale; or successful completion of the Certificat de Maturité, Maturitatzeugnis or Attestato de Maturita.
Taiwan
Senior high school and a two-year Junior College Diploma; or Junior High School and a five-year Junior College Diploma.
Thailand
Maw 6 (M6) with either 80% or more at Level 4 grades or a GPA of 2.5 or better, provided the subject mix is appropriate to the proposed programme; or successful completion of a Diploma in Vocational Education or Higher Certificate (Technician Level) (Paw Waw Saw) at a recognised* tertiary institution.
Tonga
Successful completion of Tonga National Form Seven; or South Pacific Form Seven Certificate (SPFSC) with a minimum of 3 B grades.
Turkey
Successful completion of Devlet Meslek Lise Diplomasi; or successful completion of On Lisans Diplomasi at a recognised* tertiary institution; or successful completion of an On Lisans Derecesi at a recognised tertiary institution.
UAE
Successful completion of a Higher Diploma from a recognised* Higher College of Technology.
United Kingdom
'A' and 'AS' levels GCSE

High School Diploma plus SAT-1 (taken in grade 12) score of at least 1000 combining Critical Reading and Mathematics scores (combine Verbal and Mathematics scores if results before 2005); or High School Diploma and ACT scores with as least 24 in every section; or GED Certificate with a score of at least 50% in each GED test and SAT score of 1000 or ACT scores with at least 24 in every section; or an Associate Degree from an accredited tertiary institution.
Vietnam
Successful completion of Tot nghiep cao dang; or Chung chi dai hoc dai coung from a recognised* tertiary institution.

*Recognised Tertiary Institutions and Universities are those which are recognised by The University of Waikato. To find out whether yours is a recognised tertiary institution or University, please contact the Waikato International.

Where applicants are non-native speakers of English, acceptable evidence of English language competence is required, and other students may be required to provide evidence of English language competence.

Entry requirements are constantly reviewed and the University reserves the right to amend the above guidelines at any time.

Waikato Management School undergraduate applicants must meet the overseas equivalent of a B average (The University of Waikato grading system) through their overseas secondary and/or tertiary education.

Some programmes e.g. Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design, have limited numbers.

Special Admission

Students over 20 years of age with successful post-secondary education and/or work experience may be considered for special admission to a Bachelor degree if they do not meet academic requirements. The Faculties or Schools of Studies may place students admitted on the basis of special admission in a restricted programme of studies. The Waikato Management School (WMS) will only consider applications for special admission into their undergraduate degree programs (BMS, BECom, BTour and BCS) from applicants that have either at least 3-5 years full-time relevant work experience or 3-5 years successful tertiary study.
