Study Abroad and Exchange

Study at one of the world's top ranked universities for one or two semesters and transfer your credits back to your home degree.

This section contains information for students interested in coming to New Zealand. If you're a current University of Waikato domestic student interested in travelling overseas as part of your degree, check out our Waikato OE programme.

Explore New Zealand while you study

A study and travel experience in New Zealand is transformative. You'll join a world-class education system, meet friendly locals, see amazing sights and enjoy a healthy work-life balance. The University of Waikato is centrally located on the North Island, just 1.5 hours south of Auckland. Our location makes it easy to explore New Zealand's stunning beaches, forests, and mountains... all in one day!

Academics

Ranked in the top 1.1% of universities worldwide, the University of Waikato challenges, inspires, and prepares students to lead change. Our research is ranked highest in New Zealand for quality and impact, tackling issues of national and global importance.

Almost all papers (courses) are open to study abroad and exchange students, making it easy to get the credits you need.

Our papers are built with theoretical and practical components to enable you to get the best possible academic experience.

Our programmes are industry-relevant and some offer experiential learning opportunities such as internships and research, so you can put your learning into practice and build your networks. Our smaller class sizes provide plenty of opportunity for students to work closely with award-winning lecturers and students are supported by experienced tutors.

Student Life

Our Hamilton campus culture is relaxed and friendly. Experience market days by the lake, DJs and live music every Wednesday on the Village Green, and meet friends at one of our many on-campus cafes. Join a diverse student community with students from over 80 countries and feel at home in no time.

The Waikato international student experience starts with a week-long orientation to help you find your way around campus, meet other study abroad and exchange students, and get settled before classes begin. During orientation, you'll have the opportunity to join student clubs and the International Buddy Programme, learn more about volunteering in the Waikato community, and sign up for international student trips.

Accommodation

At Waikato, we have many accommodation options to choose from, so there's something for everyone. Living on-campus provides the ultimate Kiwi student experience - it's a great way to meet new people and immerse yourself in student life. If you're looking to improve your English or want a home away from home, try a homestay and live with a local New Zealand family.

Costs and Scholarships

Study abroad students pay a flat fee that includes student fees, airport pick-up, official transcript and tuition for papers to a maximum of 70 credit points. The study abroad fee does not include accommodation, field trips, textbooks, or other living costs.

Exchange students are not required to pay tuition, as this is paid to your home university. Check our list of partner universities to see if your university has an exchange agreement with the University of Waikato.

  • Student health insurance (per semester): $295 NZD

There are several scholarships available to Study Abroad students, particularly those from the US and Europe.
