2009 Student Profile
| DAISY LEPON |
| Degree: |
MSocSc (Labour Studies) |
The people of New Zealand and its government have enhanced Daisy Lepon’s life and allowed her to achieve the success she could only have dreamed of in her homeland.
Before commencing her studies at Waikato University, Daisy worked as a Gender Development Advisor in the horticulture industry of Papua New Guinea. She had previously studied at diploma level in agriculture and business development, but decided to pursue social sciences as her chosen career pathway demanded expertise in social science research.
"I chose to study labour and development studies here at Waikato University for various reasons. Firstly, there were no such courses or programmes available in Papua New Guinea's higher training institutions. Secondly, it was one of Papua New Guinea's priority areas for training in human resource development. Lastly, I chose to study abroad to acquire skills and confidence which would enhance my working experience."
Daisy has already graduated with a Graduate Diploma in Social Sciences at Waikato and is currently working on a Master of Social Sciences in Labour Studies, which focuses on the benefits and costs of Pacific migrant seasonal farm workers.
Throughout her time in New Zealand, Daisy has been particularly impressed with the country's initiatives to help in the support and development of migrant communities. This has made her transition into kiwi-life much easier.
"My coming to New Zealand to study has given me ideas about Western cultures and norms, which are very different to my environment in Papua New Guinea. I have made many friends, both kiwis and from around the globe, and I enjoy networking and socialising with Māori, Pakeha, Chinese, and Indian Hindu social groups."
While studying towards her thesis, Daisy will have a quick break to enjoy her graduation with her two sons and a special friend who helped her settle into life in Hamilton.
"I am so proud I’m lost with words. It's a privilege and an honour for me to have come this far to complete my qualification and graduate at Waikato University, an internationally recognized Education Institution."
