PHILLIPPA ULENBERG
Degree: Master of Music
(also completed a BMus(Hons), MA)
Career Aspirations: Composer

P UlenbergThe chance for a new direction, and a desire to do what she loves brought Phillippa Ulenberg to Waikato University in 2003.

Phillippa, who is currently completing her second Masters degree in music, says that music has always been an important part of her life.  After raising a family, Phillippa worked in school administration in Whitianga for a number of years, before deciding that it was time for a new direction.

"Each musical experience at Waikato has been a learning curve which has led to personal and professional growth. I wanted to continue to grow in my passion - Waikato gives me that opportunity."

Phillippa believes Waikato has plenty to offer aspiring musicians that are contemplating future study.

"The performing facilities here are brilliant, and the staff are both helpful and talented. I also enjoy the small departmental feel of Waikato. We get so many opportunities that you wouldn't get at a larger university", she says.

Phillippa is currently studying composition and has an interest in exploring the sound-scapes of the New Zealand environment and bringing together different musical traditions.  One of her compositions, which included Chinese guzheng, cello, piano and taonga puoro (Māori instruments), was performed at the most recent OKTA concert.

Phillippa hopes that her studies will eventually lead to a fulfilling career in composition, writing and teaching. She hopes that other mature students will be inspired by her journey.

"It is never too late to study in your chosen field. Even if you struggled as I did at school, you may excel at tertiary level. I find that when I am completely immersed in what I am doing, I enjoy it, and that's when my best results come through. I've a simple philosophy, but it works - do your best, forget the rest!" she says.
