2010 Student Profile

ROSELYN ROBERTS
Degree: BSocSc (Women's and Gender Studies)
Career Aspirations: To work in Women's Affairs

R RobertsMoving to a new country to study was a big change for Papua New Guinean student Roselyn Roberts, but Roselyn is glad she did it, even if winter mornings are a bit of a challenge for someone born in the sunny tropics.

"During the winter season, it is so cold that school work is sometimes hard to handle because I'm too cold and shaky! But I've had so many positive experiences here: studying with students from different backgrounds, learning and exchanging different languages, taking trips to visit new places, tasting new food - particularly hangi - and living in an environment of diverse cultures and identities.

"These experiences are really making my studies at Waikato University memorable, even though in the beginning it was hard at first trying to adjust to the new culture. Another struggle for me has been trying to understand English accents from different lecturers while going through my lectures. But as time goes by, I have managed well in my studies and I'm really finding the joy of being a student in the school."

Roselyn is able to attend Waikato as a result of the NZAID scholarship, and she plans on putting her education to good use.

"I am studying Women's and Gender Studies as an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences," Roselyn explains. "This is because where I come from there is a great need for change in the status of women and taking this subject will help me be knowledgeable in the area of women issues, so that I'll be able to contribute towards empowering women in my country and other developing countries."

So with such great plans for her future, Roselyn is glad she chose Waikato University to kick-start her ambitions.

"Waikato University is a great place to study your degree and you will never regret choosing the courses that are offered here. The academic teachings are excellent with lecturers from all round the world so you will get to experience the world of knowledge. Apart from this there are lots of other things that you will get to discover once you enter the institution. So by choosing to take up a degree at Waikato University you're making a great decision."
