2008 Student Profile

SCOT HALL
Degree: BA (Theatre Studies and English)
Career Aspiration: To work within the creative and performing arts

S HallHe once read that to become a successful actor, you don't enrol in a school that teaches acting; you enrol in a school that teaches Social Studies, Politics and History, because you can’t play the Amish person if you don’t know how an Amish person lives.

Taking that piece of advice on board, Scot Hall chose to enrol in a Bachelor of Arts at Waikato University so he could learn all the creative aspects of performing while broadening his outlook on the world and society.

"I’m majoring in Theatre Studies and English to directly influence my acting, directing and writing, and trying to spend the rest of my time learning about the world around me and the great ideas of the past and present."

Since commencing his tertiary studies in 2008, he already has a number of impressive achievements under his belt, including a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship and the Vice Chancellor’s Prize for Academic Excellence.

"With this much support from the University I knew that Waikato would be a place that would take good care of me as an academic and a performer."

Scot was selected from 5000 applicants as one of 24 young actors to be a member of the SCGNZ New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company, and travelled to London in July 2008 to study and perform at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

"I feel like as a result of this experience I'm beginning to develop a taste for what it is Iconsider great theatre, which is being coloured and extended by each new lecture, book and performance I encounter at the University of Waikato", he says.

Somehow in between University obligations and part time work, Scot managed to find time to participate in several shows this year, including 'Compleat Female Stage Beauty', 'Do you speak English', 'The Joss Adam's Show' and 'The Shape of Things'.

Scot still has a few years ahead of him at Waikato University, but wants to use that time to develop his skills so he can one day work full-time as an actor, writer, director or producer.

"I’d like to apprentice myself to working Hamilton directors producing shows in the Waikato, because its not a trade you can really learn from a textbook, and also write some material over the next three or four years. Whatever work I end up doing, I know it will be within the performing arts".
