The Sounds of Aotearoa/New Zealand
Symposium and Special Issue of Journal of New Zealand Literature
Call for Papers
A Symposium on ‘The Sounds of Aotearoa/New Zealand’, funded by the Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden Fund, will be held at The University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand on November 27 and 28 2009.
Those presenting at the Symposium will have an opportunity to submit their papers for publication in a Special Issue of the Journal of New Zealand Literature (likewise funded by the Marsden Fund). Scholars working in the field, but unable to attend the Symposium, are also welcome to submit papers for consideration and publication in the journal.
Given that the field of sound and New Zealand culture is a relatively new and interdisciplinary area of academic research, the aim of both the Symposium and the Special Issue is to provide a forum for discussion and debate. Papers are invited which address the meaning and importance of sound in a New Zealand cultural context.
Suggested topics include, but are not restricted to:
- the evocation of sound by writers
- the use of sound in film/ on stage
- the relationship between sound and place
- the history of sound
- acoustic environments
- sound and gender
- sound and ethnicity
Please contact Dr Kirstine Moffat, Department of Humanities, The University of Waikato by emailing kirstine@waikato.ac.nz if you have any questions or wish to submit an abstract.
