日本_[にほん]では、大学_{[だいがく]}に入_[はい]りたい人_[ひと]は、入学_{[にゅうがく]}(= entrance)試験_[しけん] (= exam)を受_[う]けなければなりません。入学_{[にゅうがく]}試験_[しけん]はふつう、1月から3月のはじめごろにあります。この試験_[しけん]に合格_{[ごうかく]} (= to pass)しなかったら、次_[つぎ]の年_[とし]の1月まで待_[ま]たなければなりません。

多_[おお]くの学生_{[がくせい]}は、いくつかの大学_{[だいがく]}の試験_[しけん]を受_[う]けます。第一_{[だいいち]}志望_[しぼう] (= the first preferred)の大学_{[だいがく]}に合格_{[ごうかく]}するのがいちばんいいのですが、それは難_[むずか]しいことが多_[おお]いです。ですから、いくつか(= several)試験_[しけん]を受_[う]けて、合格_{[ごうかく]}した大学_{[だいがく]}に行_[い]きます。ある大学_{[だいがく]}にどうしても(= no matter what)行_[い]きたい人_[ひと]は、その大学_{[だいがく]}の試験_[しけん]だけ受_[う]けます。そして落_[お]ちたら(= to fail)、また次_[つぎ]の年_[とし]にチャレンジします。そういう学生_{[がくせい]}も多_[おお]いです。

さて。遠_[とお]いところにある大学_{[だいがく]}の試験_[しけん]を受_[う]けるために、学生_{[がくせい]}はホテルに泊_[と]まります。とても多_[おお]くの学生_{[がくせい]}がいくつもの大学_{[だいがく]}を受_[う]けます。だから、この大学_{[だいがく]}試験_[しけん]の時期_[じき] (= time)は、ホテルにとってとても大切_{[たいせつ]}なビジネスの時期_[じき]です。これについて、先日_{[せんじつ]}、朝日_[あさひ]新聞_{[しんぶん]}で面白_{[おもしろ]}い記事_[きじ]を読_[よ]みました。

あるホテルでは、学生_{[がくせい]}を応援_{[おうえん]}する(= to support)ために、特別_{[とくべつ]}な朝食_{[ちょうしょく]}メニュを用意_[ようい]する(= to prepare)そうです。例_[たと]えば、脳_[のう] (= brain)を活性化_{[かっせいか]}する(= to stimulate)きのこのオムレツ、目_[め]によいブルーベリーなどだそうです。日本_[にほん]では、大学_{[だいがく]}の入学_{[にゅうがく]}試験_[しけん]は本当_{[ほんとう]}に大変_{[たいへん]}なのです。

In Japan, people have to take entrance exams and pass to admit a university. Almost of all universities hold such exams between January and March. If the students do not pass the exams, they have to wait until next January – March.

The ideal is, of course, everybody goes to the university s/he really wants to go, but it is not always easy. So many students take several exams at several universities and go to the one where they manage to pass the exam (otherwise they might have to waif for another year). If they have one particular university in their mind and want to go there no matter what, they just take the exam of that particular university; if they fail – of course, they will have to wait for a year for another chance.

Anyway. Many students take such entrance exams at several universities. Those exams are often held away from the students' hometown. In that case, they have to stay at a hotel near the university (the exam venue). Since many students do so, this is a good business opportunity for the hotel industry. I read an interesting article in Asahi Shimbun Newspaper the other day.

To attract students (precious customers), quite a few hotels prepare all sorts of special things for them. According to the article, a hotel serves special breakfast for the students; it includes omelette with mushroom (which is thought to stimulate a brain) and blueberries (good for eyes). Sounds ridiculous? – no, no, it is not ridiculous; taking entrance exams is indeed a big deal in Japan!
